The Story of Steve & Iris Maytan

After the close of World War II, Steve Maytan was playing saxophone and clarinet professionally with the "Big Bands". In 1947, he decided to head West to San Francisco where he could use his musical talents to further his career.  In May, Steve arrived in Reno with 47 cents in his pocket. The area appealed to Steve and after camping beside the Truckee River for a few days, (where Sutro crosses over), found work with local show bands. A graduate of the Conn Instrument Repair School, Steve went to work for a local music store as an instrument repairman.

Iris moved to Reno with her family while she was in high school. A fine pianist and organist, she played the piano bar at the old Trocadero Club in downtown Reno. She is a charter member of the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra and organist at her church for fifty years.

On April 1, 1959, Steve and Iris opened their own Modern Music Center in a house on Center Street which still stands today, just north of the current location. Generations of musicians bought their first instruments and learned to play there.

In 1979, Steve and Iris opened Maytan Music Center. The store features 18 teaching studios, a spacious recital hall upstairs, 3 instrument repair shops, a piano showroom, main showroom and a temperature-humidity controlled showroom for the professional stringed instruments.
